July 14, 2000 TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING IS WONDERFUL. Follow "feminist humor maven" (Ms.) and elegant revenge expert/"saucy babe"(BG) Regina Barreca, Ph.D., as she follows a boy to London, infidelity's trail to the other woman, and Valentine's Day to its logical conclusion (day-after disappointment, even when you're married). (And if you like this essay collection, you'll LIKElike Perfect Husbands and Other Fairy Tales: Demystifying Men, Marriage, and Romance and They Used to Call Me Snow White...but I Drifted : Women's Strategic Use of Humor as much as BG did.) NYMPHOMANIA: A HISTORY. Ever hear of "satyriasis?" Didn't think so! It is, in theory, the boy equivalent of "nymphomania." But see -- as Carol Groneman elucidates in her landmark historical inquiry -- the whole "nympho" notion is a boy thing to begin with ... used to pathologize, medicalize, criminalize female -- gasp! -- desire (also see The Heidi/Ho Complex). Once I opened this book, I -- gasp! -- couldn't get enough. THE "GR" IN "ANGRY." Though "born not angry," Lela Lee became an angry little Asian girl growing up. She's since channelled that emotion into a pair of Web sites that combine equal parts rage, cuteness, and truth in comics and clickable stories. After starting with AngryLittleAsianGirl.com, Lee has added a troop of troubled tots to the mix at AngryLittleGirls.com. Go be angry! [--Colin] ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY. One day, maybe, but in the opening essay of this new essay collection, things do not look (or sound) good. The lisping Sedaris is carted off to speech therapy -- more like deprogramming: "None of the therapy students were girls. They were all boys like me who kept movie star scrapbooks and made their own curtains." Fortunately for Sedaris lovers -- and LOVERlovers -- his proclivities and hilarity remain constant throughout.
