CALLER ID. Nearly half the respondents to a recent survey say that when using a cell phone, they call their spouse or squeeze more often than they do friends, coworkers, parents or siblings. No word yet on whether there's any link from that habit to brain damage. TELL ME NO LIES. This new book by a married team of psychologists suggests that in a relationship, "harmless" fibbing is itself a lie. A truly big exception is BG's warning against this fool's gold standard of full disclosure: IMPORTANT BREAKUP GIRL MAXIM: Do not ask each other more than you really want to know. The answer will likely be: more than you really want to know.
YOU'RE TOO KIND: A BRIEF HISTORY OF FLATTERY. Then there's this kind of lie: "Flattery works like a heat-seeking missile, only what the missile homes in on is our vanity...We all want to be liked. We all want to be appreciated. Flattery almost always hits the target because the target -- you, me everybody -- rises up to meet it. There is no natural defensive. We don't doubt because we want to believe. If it's a lie, it's a lie we don't care or want to question" (author Richard Stengel.).
