XI. Industrial Revolution
Railway brings mixed news for romance.
Good: long-distance lovers no longer have to get the horse for
the weekend in order to rendezvous.
Bad: singles on railway platform subjected to new, industrialized,
form of lovey-dovey-that is, the forlorn, jogging-alongside-the-departing-train
goodbye.
The advent of the telephone is not to revolutionize the breakup until
later development of features such as call-screening, unlisted numbers,
and "I can't talk, I'm on the other line." In the meantime, however,
the circumstances of the telephone's invention do give rise at least to
topical crank call used to harass exes:
Caller: "[Name], come quickly, I want you...NOT!"
