Dear Breakup Girl,

Recently I agreed to purchase a $500 tennis bracelet for my girlfriend. Now that she's had the opportunity to pick one out, she wants one that costs almost $2000. Our relationship is pretty good, but only one year of dating is not long enough for this type of purchase. Am I being cheap or should I dump her?

-- Darnell

Dear Darnell,

If you were Puffy Combs, $2000 would be fine even for a first date, I guess. It's all relative. But I do see what you're saying.

So let me ask you this: you "agreed" to buy the tennis bracelet? Hmm. Who served? And then the price inflation? Far be it from me to stoop to stereotypes and accuse women of goldigging, but ... is this babe goldigging? At very least, this upgrade is tacky. It's lovely to [have the means to] be generous and magnanimous, but bottom line, the only appreciation that should be taking place here is hers. Of you. With or without bonus trinkets. If not, well, game-set-mismatch.

Love,
Breakup Girl
