Dear Breakup Girl,
My boyfriend and I recently broke up about 3 days ago for the 20th time in
the last year. Every time we break up, he puts on a sad face and asks me back.
I know that I deserve better but how do I leave him alone instead of being a
sucker. I am 22 and he is 32. I love him with all of my heart but in this
relationship love is not enough. He has a drinking problem and I have tried to
help and for awhile he was doing good. But whenever there's a problem that he
can't deal with then he goes to the bottle. He's not abusive to me but when he
gets drunk he gets an attitude. Myself, I am not one to deal with an attitude.
Do you have any advice?
-- Looking for Love
Dear Looking,
Yes. Do the math. According to the Breakup Girl
supercomputer, you guys stay together for an average of 18.25 days at a time.
That, with all due respect to our SAT-taking friends, is way too high school
for you two. And now for the reading comprehension portion: "Does the
writer really know that she deserves better?" (a) No, (b) No, (c) No, (d),
No, (e) All of the above. Get him into AA (in so far as you have the power to
encourage this); get yourself into the popular clique. Of two: Your bad self,
and a professional counselor who believes in you.
Love,
Breakup Girl
