Dear Breakup Girl,
I don't know if this is true, but my best friend's fiance is going around and
telling his best friend that he is sleeping with three other girls.
I was sworn to secrecy not to tell, but this other friend is also very dear
to me. What should I do?
-- Cyndi
Dear Cyndi,
Okay, so how reliable is the "best friend" who
told you? (As reliable as the fiance?) Hrrrrrm.
Cyndi, you've got to put on your cutest girl detective
outfit and get some ironclad evidence. Clear testimony from a reliable source.
If this is really happening, someone will talk (someone already has). Heck,
confront the fiance if you must.
IF you can get that, then yes, you tell her. BG takes
promises seriously, but: Your Best Friend "Would Want To Know"* trumps
Sworn to Secrecy by Some Gossip Monger Who Can't Possibly Think You're Not Gonna
Tell Your Best Friend in the First Place.
A couple more things, though. Unless the fiance is sleeping
with all three women at once (I mean, at once), which I wouldn't put
past him, I must say that -- if only for pure logistical/time management reasons
-- I suspect your friend...suspects. And even if she doesn't -- and even if
she is willing to believe you -- she might not do anything about it. Got that?
She might not leave. And alas, you can't make her. People make peculiar choices.
So you can tell her, but I'd rather you not, at any point, tell her "I
told you so."
Love,
Breakup Girl
* If nothing else, for safety
reasons! Yikes.
