Dear Breakup Girl,

My boyfriend and I just broke up. We decided to remain friends -- or so I thought. He's having a birthday dance, and I'm the only one in the class who's not invited. What's up with that? I feel hurt.

-- Fantine

Dear Fantine,

Ow! Hey everyone? There's no point in "inviting everyone in the class" if you don't invite everyone in the class. Of course that smarts, Fantine.

Best I can do is point out that "let's be friends" is an easy -- and often sincere -- thing to say, but actually figuring out how to do it day-to-day and dance-to-dance, especially so soon, is verrrry tricky. Seeing each other...around, instead of Seeing Each Other, is just gonna take some time to get used to. In this case, my guess is that he was making a clumsy-as-his-dancing effort to avoid awkwardness and weirdness...but of course it accomplished the opposite.

So you're perfectly entitled to tell him that you know being friends will feel funny, but so did not being invited. He'll probably apologize and say you should come. Which is fine. But you won't be the only one in the class that just might not feel like going.

Love,
Breakup Girl
