Dear Breakup Girl,
What do you suggest is the "proper" thing to do with letters, pictures, etc.
from past relationships? I have them tucked neatly away and my current girlfriend
who lives with me has "stumbled upon" some of the things and INSISTS that they
be thrown out because "what use would I have for them since I am with her now?"
What is your take on this matter? I feel like it's a part of my past, and although
I don't plan on going back and reading them, I am not ready to throw everything
out as if I never experienced it. HELP. It's a big problem between us.
--Chris
Dear Chris,
You're right. We are human scrapbooks. It is possible
to have a purely passive sentimental attachment to the snapshots and epistles
of our past; it is also possible to have a partner who doesn't appreciate them.
So store them way out of "stumbling's" way, and work on whatever it'll
take for your girlfriend to be more secure in her steps.
Love,
Breakup Girl
