Dear Breakup Girl,
My boyfriend and I are not speaking at the moment. The reason is that I've
kind of been harping on him to go to the gym and now he thinks it's because
I don't think he's sexy. Actually, it's because I am a nursing student who is
made aware -- in each class I attend -- of the dangers of being overweight and
not exercising. Anyway, last Saturday morning, I found that he had eaten a whole
box of granola, and I was disappointed because he obviously didn't care if anyone
else wanted any because he had eaten all of it. I said as much to him and now
he won't speak to me. What should I do?
--Maria
Dear Maria,
Talk about "resistance training." If only digging
in one's heels against "harping" burned calories; he'd be fit as a
fiddle. Maria -- no matter how healthy (literally) your motives -- the more
you push, the more he'll ... sit very, very still. Especially if you push in
the form of micro-berating him for minor granola misdemeanors (which seemed
to bug you more in the realm of manners, anyway). If you're in this for the
long, strong haul, focus on encouraging/exemplifying -- not enforcing -- healthy
eating and shared physical activities and, speaking of which, showing
him how sexy you think he is (right?).
Love,
Breakup Girl
