Dear Breakup Girl,
When you know you are not happy, when you're pretty sure things can't be
fixed, you make this crazy decision to break up. Right? Even though you know it
is going to be painful, it's the best thing in the long run. But how the heck
do you totally go through with it when the person you're breaking up with says
"OK. Let's break up." Like they are not even bothered!!! You instinct
is to be "Hey! You should be heartbroken! I am a good catch!"
Sometimes, anticipating this reaction totally prevents me from ever breaking
up. Not only am I hurt because I am breaking it off with someone I care about,
I have that wonderful extra added bonus pain caused by the dumpee saying
"No problem. It was about time." I guess I want a fight. Something
like "No, let's talk. I am not ready for this...blah, blah, blah."
How do I handle that pain?
-- Kimberlee
Dear Kimberlee,
Hah! Right. You're like, "I totally don't want to
hurt your feelings ....what do you mean, I didn't!?" First of all,
keep in mind that what they say may be different from what they feel. Also keep
in mind that if you do break up with someone who puts up a fight, boy will you
miss the people who don't. But bottom line, you should (a) definitely be
breaking up with people who are indifferent to begin with, and (b) date only
people who will be really sad when you dump them.
Well, you know what I mean.
Love,
Breakup Girl
PS Hey look, Liss feels the same way...
