Dear Breakup Girl,
I've been dating this guy for about two months. Actually, we've only gone out
about four times. He is definitely more into me than I am him. He really is
just not my type.
I want to breakup with him, and I want to do it over the phone. He is a lawyer,
and I know if I meet him for drinks I will get the third degree and it will
be ugly. Given the short period of time we've been going out is it okay to breakup
over the phone?
-- Liz
Dear Liz,
As I've stated here,
the phone breakup is perfectly acceptable given the intensity (lack thereof)
of your relationship. But not necessarily just as a means of avoiding "the
third degree." Mainly because it won't necessarily work. Going to a
bar and being a member of the bar are equally likely to make someone
ask a lot of questions; your right to remain silent will sound a whole lot more
awkward on the phone in the first place. So go ahead, but make sure your inner
attorney has prepared some answers.
Love,
Breakup Girl
