Dear Breakup Girl,
I just wanted to tell you that I met you when you came and visited St.
Louis; I had asked you what to do about my boyfriend whom I didn't like,
but was going to prom with in a week. So, I guess I followed your advice and
dropped the post prom bomb ... the day after prom (oops). But that's not the
worst part: now I think I made a mistake, and maybe I should should have held
out on the breakup. Please help. Should I tell him I want to get back together?
Should I wait? Hope you can help.
--PPB Girl
Dear PPB Girl,
Oh hi!
So you're a TUPPIE,* huh? Hmm, let's see. If I remember
correctly, there was actually a bit of a lively debate at that booksigning
over what you should do and when. But now that prom itself is not a factor (i.e.
a deadline), well, then and now, BG would take a position only as firm as yours
-- i.e. "my boyfriend that I didn't like" (emphasis added).
Kinda says it all, doesn't it?
Well, actually, no. I know that now -- post-breakup
and post-prom -- is a time when feelings are anything but firm.
Breakups are Mixed Feelings High, and you're the Prom Queen. Not to mention:
you probably have your share of post-prom blues. All that satiny, bubbly buildup
... and now a long dusty summer yawning ahead. It's normal to be muddled right
now. In fact -- IMPORTANT BREAKUP GIRL MAXIM -- mixed feelings
about a breakup are part of the territory, not necessarily evidence against
its wisdom.
So ask yourself: are you wondering if you made a mistake
[mostly] because you realized you actually do totally like him and you were
being completely impetuous and silly and you know that all the things that bugged
you won't, or you won't care if they do -- oooooor do you think you
made a mistake [mostly] because you feel crappy for hurting his feelings and
summer's sucky without a boyfriend and life seems a whole lot more interesting
when you have breakups to debate about at booksignings? Either way is okay,
girlie; just want you to double check before you double back. Glad you wrote
me instead of waiting for me to come back into town to hawk the sequel.
Love,
Breakup Girl
