Predicament of the Week
In which Breakup Girl addresses the situation that has, this
week, brought her the most (a) amusement, (b) relief that it is happening to
someone else, and/or (c) proof that she could not possibly be making this stuff
up.
Dear Breakup Girl,
My boyfriend rolled over in the middle of the night last night and, for the
first time, said, "I love you." I asked him what he said, and he repeated, "I
love you."
But, I am not sure that he was awake; maybe just in that mostly asleep but
still talking state of mind. There was no mention of it this morning, and when
I said he had been talking in his sleep he just laughed.
What are the chances that he meant what he said? Or was it a fluke?
-- Kristen
Dear Kristen,
Oh, noooooo! Nightmare! Are you sure you weren't
dreaming?
All right, let's see. It is entirely possible that he
meant -- but has no recollection of saying -- all three of those words, that
they tumbled out of his subconscious before he could summon the courage to say
them in the light of day. But then again, there are lots of other three words
that people say in their sleep, such as "Freeze that mousetrap!" and
"Hoo haa gaaa!" So I would say: proceed as you would have without
this midnight interlude. If he meant it, it will probably come back during daylight;
if it was the stuff of dreams, well, then you're exactly where you were before
you went to bed that night. So you can wait impatiently, or take the informed
initiative to tell him yourself. Either way, I'll bet that one day his dreams
will come true.
Love,
Breakup Girl
