Dear Breakup Girl,
This guy and I have been serious for a couple of weeks, and I really like him.
The weird thing is that every night (and I mean every, single night), I have
a dream that he and I break up, usually due to something that's my fault. Do
these dreams mean that secretly, deep down inside, I want this to happen...
or what? I really don't think I want that; he's the sweetest, most perfect,
cutest, funniest guy in the world. Why on Earth would I want to lose him?
--Nicole
Dear Nicole,
Just because you dream
about something doesn't mean you want it to happen. Like, you think anyone's
secretly hoping they'll show up for their SAT naked with no pencils? What you've
got, dearie -- and Belleruth will
back me up -- is good ol' fashioned everyday (or night) "worry, expressed
in a dream." Worry that it's too good to be true, worry that you might
do something to mess it up. Precisely because you like him so much. And
that's actually what dreams are so great for. They're like nighttime cold medicine
that "works while you sleep!" So let your worry go ahead and do its
business while the rest of you rests. Then get up, go out, and have fun.
Love,
Breakup Girl
